Many of our users use WiFi to access their project data and there is a new security threat that you will want to be aware of and take action to prevent immediately.
Many of our user base is accessing project data from the field. That means they are constantly moving from network to network either from the job site or accessing their information when they stop for their morning coffee. WiFi networks have always been notoriously risky, even in brand-name hotels and our beloved Starbucks.
It appears that risk has just gone up tremendously.
A serious new vulnerability called KRACK was just announced, likely impacting anyone who uses WiFi. KRACK allows attackers access to important information like credit card numbers, passwords, and emails transmitted over WiFi networks. This vulnerability can also allow attackers to potentially infect your devices with malware or ransomware.
There are two easy fixes:
1) Always use your phone as a hotspot for your tablet and notebook and NEVER use public WiFi anywhere. This works great if you have a good cellular signal (ideally LTE) AND an unlimited data plan.
2) Subscribe to Norton WiFi Privacy which automatically creates a secure (encrypted) virtual private network (VPN, AKA tunnel) from your device to their servers before routing on the wired internet.
You might not have thought about how even a simple thing like your email password can be used if stolen. Not only can hackers learn a lot about you by reading your email, they can message any of your contacts POSING AS YOU. Imagine: “Honey, I lost my wallet and phone. Could you please wire $1,000 to …”
These risks are only rising and you want to make sure you and your company are protected from any vulnerabilities.
Just this week alone, we’ve had two users compromised and to say it was a major headache to get everything resolved, would be an understatement.
