From Classroom to CEO: How Maggie Kuyper Built a Thriving Business and Community

Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns—and for Maggie Kyper, the journey from classroom teacher to co-founder of a $9 million painting business has been nothing short of a ride. In a heartfelt sitdown with Owner Insite CEO, Steve Harper, Maggie shared the challenges, lessons, and triumphs that have shaped Harpeth Painting into a company known for its quality, character, and community focus.

A Leap of Faith

Maggie always dreamed of creating something of her own. With a background in teaching and her husband Matt’s experience in commercial construction, they saw an opportunity to combine their skills. Starting with little more than determination and a garage full of equipment, they slowly built Harpeth Painting from the ground up.

Maggie reflects on those early years: “We were scrappy, frugal, and intentional. We didn’t take risks we couldn’t afford. It was hard, messy, and humbling—but we believed in what we were building.”

People Over Paint

For Maggie, painting is just the surface of their business—people are at its core. Whether it’s employees, clients, or community partners, Harpeth Painting thrives on creating lasting and authentic relationships. Maggie’s approach is straightforward: treat people well, own your mistakes, and focus on creating positive experiences.

“It’s not just about the dollar,” Maggie says. “We’re here to build trust and make a difference in the lives of everyone we interact with.”

A Woman Breaking Barriers in Construction

Maggie is part of a growing wave of women transforming the construction industry. While the space has traditionally been male-dominated, she’s seen significant progress. From job sites to boardrooms, women are stepping into leadership roles and changing perceptions.

Her advice for women entering the industry: “Stand tall, own your expertise, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The construction world is evolving, and there’s plenty of room for us to make our mark.”

A Name with Heart

The name “Harpeth Painting” is deeply personal. It honors the Harpeth River, which runs through Nashville and was a defining part of Maggie and Matt’s life. After losing their home to a devastating flood in 2010, they learned the true power of community. This experience inspired them to make community a key ingredient of their business—and today, they give back through partnerships with organizations like the Harpeth Conservancy.

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those considering entrepreneurship, Maggie offers honest and encouraging words: “It’s going to be hard, and it’s going to get messy. But lean into your strengths, stay grounded, and never underestimate the power of community. You can’t do it alone—and you shouldn’t have to.”
